CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Socorro "Coco" Rivera
CANON: Coco
CHARACTER INFORMATION: Coco is the daughter of Imelda and Héctor Rivera. She is the great grandmother of Miguel Rivera, the film's protagonist. As an old woman, she suffers a degenerating memory but otherwise seems happy save for when the topic of her father comes up. She is often found at Miguel's side as the boy tells her everything and tries to involve her in his games. She secretly disapproves of the music ban, much like Miguel.
Her personality shows best in the novel. She is kind and caring, treasuring her family and the things they do, even when she at times finds things silly. However, she has a streak of rebelliousness. She loves to dance and regularly sneaks off to do so, despite the music ban. The secret room in the attic that Miguel slips off to in the movie was once hers and she danced there before finally sneaking off to dance in the plaza. She pushing against her mother's strict rules, from rescuing the "failed" shoes that her uncles made from the garbage, stealing an extra pair of dance shoes for herself, to trying to plead with her mother to bend or ease the music ban. Like her father, she has a tendency for guilty smiles and very bad lies. She can be forgetful and spacey, like when she brings back flowers instead of flour after a day of dancing.
She meets Julio in the plaza and they dance together many times (with him giving her gifts) before they're caught. He gives up dancing in order to marry her and she's charmed by his bravery in the face of her mother and sad when music is given up (and Imelda again refuses to cave on the ban, even for her wedding). But, she gave up on dancing fully when she slipped in adulthood and twisted her ankle. Her daughters, both deeply upset by this, prompted her to finally given in to the ban so that she wouldn't upset them again. Nonetheless, when Miguel is born, she hums the old lullaby, Rememeber Me, to him stubbornly stating to herself that "they can't stop me from singing to the children". She is the spark that led to Miguel's interest in music.
With all this, she is still dutiful. She does not enjoy shoemaking like the rest of her family, finding it to be a tedious chore, but she persists because it matters to her family and, even with her sadness regarding the ban, she loves her family deeply. Her disagreements never extend into anger. Even her thoughts of her father are still largely kind. She preserves his picture and his letter for many years, keeping it all hidden and safe.
AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: Socorro "Coco" Rivera
AGE: 15 as of app, 16 in August
PLOT LINK: link.
ROLE IN SETTING: Coco will be trying to slip in as a student (though she may not officially enroll herself... or may enroll under an entirely different name). She's really here looking for her father, with what little she can remember of him, and trying to uncover what it is that's making him vanish from mind. She'll be here to jog the memory of friends in Daybreak for a later rescue on the Day of the Dead (October). In the meantime, she'll be seeing for the first time what goes on in the magical community, something she's always felt she was missing.
AU BACKSTORY: Coco was born into a renowned mage family, the Riveras, as a half-mage. The Riveras are known as necromancers for their work with spirits but they do not raise the dead. She was raised outside of the mage community due to her parent's mutual disapproval of the attitudes and politics within those spaces. Instead, she grew up in a normal town on the "normal" side of the veil, keeping the magic she had a secret.
Her father was a musician and she remembers those early years with deep fondness, when her home was filled with music all the time. Unfortunately, at four years old, he left home and didn't return. Her mother assumed he had abandoned them and this led to a ban on music. She was taught the ins and outs of magic by her mother, but she did not feel proficient in it in the way of her summoner mother, or even her twin uncles with their constant magical experiments. She was, in her mind, a woefully unmagical mage.
Further, was the divide it put in her life. She could only use magic at home and she could only steal chances at music when away from it. She was a happy girl, no doubt, but she often missed her father and felt she could never truly be herself no matter where she went.
Things changed with the approach of Nightfall. Her mother left home to work at the school, Daybreak, something she would only do if the situation was truly dire. She was left at home with her uncles, which meant a lot more shenanigans and a lot more chances to sneak music into her life. But, it also meant a rise in worry and missing her mother now too. She kept up with phone calls to her mother and, at fourteen, she reveals that her father was at the school too, that he had gotten lost in the outlands and was "very sick" and at the school to "get better". She got to speak with him and the world felt like a dream. She was afraid for a while that it was indeed a dream, but things got better. The ban was lifted, and for her quinceñera, her father was allowed to come home. She could imagine no better birthday, even when her parents had to leave again soon after.
(At some point in all this, Daybreak's Peter Parker briefly stayed at the Rivera household. She may have gotten into a few spiderman antics during this.)
But then, in winter, her mother returned without her father. Things became hectic at home. She noticed her mother acting odd over certain things. The mention of her father never went over well and music was often turned off. Then, somehow, though he never had before, her father began to slip from her mind. Treasured phone calls were missed, or she found herself occupied and forgetting to call back.
It was the latter case before she got one last call, an accidental dial she had to assume for she could hear nothing on the other end. The letters of the caller seemed scrambled for a moment before she read it as "Papá". She couldn't remember putting anything like that in her phone-- perhaps it was a prank. But upon thinking of "remembering", the memory of a song slammed into her. Suddenly, she had to search for signs of her father. She checked her phone, the house, even asking her family, but she got very little as far as results.
Forcing herself to recall everything she could, she made a plan. She had never done anything so drastic, not even when she felt the music ban might suffocate her. But, this was a matter of saving her family. She had to do something and if Mamá could go to a school and teach, she could do this. She could go to find her father herself. This time, she knew he hadn't abandoned her and she wouldn't abandon him.
Goals: Coco's goal is to find her father and uncover the mystery behind everyone's faltering memories. She wants to see who here remembers him and see if they can help her. She wants to do so before her mother figures out she's not actually at [Insert excuse location here, probably a relative's place].
POWERS: Coco is a mage. She works with various spells and is more knowledgeable in areas of spirits and summoning (but not raising the dead). However, she has no particularly amazing skills any which way. (Yet.)
RP SAMPLE
1. WHAT DO YOU MOST HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH?
I'm hoping to learn a lot here! I feel like I haven't really gotten to explore this part of my life before. This place has made a big impact on my family and I want to... understand better. (half-lie)
2. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE TO ACHIEVE THIS?
...I don't know. I don't really want to sacrifice anything. I've already had to give up a lot of things in my life, and to be here, and I really want to get things back.
6. WHY IS THIS GOAL IMPORTANT TO YOU?
It's kind of to do with my family. I want to set things right with mine. I think I need to be here for that.
7. IF YOUR GOAL WERE TO BECOME IMPOSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
I... I guess I would- I would go home...
11. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A SECRETIVE PERSON OR MORE OF AN OPEN BOOK?
Some people say I'm a bad liar but I've been keeping secrets my whole life and I don't think anyone knows about those.
